Yes, low calorie food is the prime target of many people. Before I provide a list of low calorie foods, let me discuss how a food can produce less calories.
Less fat means less calorie, why or how?
First check which food contains what calories. Carbohydrate and protein contain same amount of calorie, which is 4 calories per gram. But fat produces 9 calories per gram. So if 10 gram of a food contain mostly carbohydrate and protein then it can produce maximum of 40 calories. On the other case if it contains mostly fat, then the same amount of food ( 10 gram) can produce 70/80 (if some fat and others protein or carbohydrate) or even 90 calorie ( if the whole thing is fat, like oil).
So you see the food which contains less fat carries less calories than the one which contains fat, even though they weigh the same.
There is one more important issue.
Less calories if food contains water!
Some foods like Campbell's chunky soups or Hearty Vegetable with Pasta Soup contain good amount of water. So here 10 grams of soup means only 6/7 grams of carbohydrate and protein, rest is water, which does not produce any water. So 10 grams of these soup will have around 25 calories only. A completely dry food will not have any water, so all of its weight will be converted to calories. Actually most of the foods contains a portion of water, it may be more or less. So if it contains more water then weight will be more but calories will be less.
So which one are low calories food then!
So you see no food can be low calorie or high calorie technically. If it contain 10 grams of carbohydrate or protein it will always produce 40 calories of energy and if it contains 10 grams of fat it will produce 90 calories, always. But the trick is to eat food which contain less fat and more water. Suppose if you drink vegetable juice it contains a good amount of water, so a can of vegetable juice usually produce only 40/ 50 calories, because it contain water and not much sugar. But the regular drinks carries lots of sugar so they produce more calories. So now you know that you want to eat foods which contains less fat and and more water, then it will be a low calorie food.
